She was hounded, she found, she worked on symmetric literature. She did all the things that you would expect a brave, intelligent woman to do at that time. When she arrived in America, the first thing she did was learn English. There was a political freedom in America, which she really felt wasn't there in Europe. But she was very conscious of her status as a refugee and adopted the position of the pariah.
