The NPFL is said to have slaughtered over 500 people at the Mandingo town of Bakedu, an atrocity which was to spark off an ethnic feud within Lofa County. Prince Johnson's forces were advancing on Monrovia from the northwest, Taylor's from the north and east. By July 2, 1990, there were no more than five miles from the center of Monrovia.
