The Continuity of Harold Wilson's Speech

There were plenty of Tories who found a great deal in Wilson's speech to agree with. He would mock the Conservative Party for rolling on their back like a spaniel at the first hint of encouragement from Paris about getting into the European economic community. There was something sort of deep England about him but also he had that black quality, I think, of appearing young and dynamic. The other thing, though, we have to factor in is the state of the Conservative Party at the time. Much more so than the Conservatives had been in the 50s. We divided between the Bebbe Knights and the Gates Galites. Then after Gates' school died, then Labour had a quite bitter leadership election
