Gaius Gimellis was a member of a moderately wealthy family with connections to the Roman army. He lost one eye and then he subsequently developed a cataract in his remaining eye. This left him, as you can imagine, with a very serious visual impairment. We know that several of his neighbours came onto his land,. stole his crops and cast spells on him because they held him in contempt for being blind. What did he do about it? Can he turn somewhere and say, help? Yes, well, we know about this ordinary man's ordinary life and these unpleasant experiences is because he exercised his legal rights as a Roman citizen and he campaigned for a dress.
