Is Sympathy Really Sympathetic?
Sympathy does involve understanding from your own perspective, but empathy involves you doing the work to put yourself in somebody else's shoes. I also think that we don't use sympathy as much as sempathy is because of shame. And people feel that if somebody has sympathy for you, then they pity you, and that means that you should be ashamed of something sometimes.
