What Happens When a Woman Is Sentenced to 18 Years?
Helen, of course, pleads guilty to manslaughter in this plea deal and she sentenced to 18 years. That is one of the longest sentences a woman had ever received for manslaughter in Canada. So how does Helen actually appeal her sentence? At some point, she agrees to speak to another lawyer. And so a defense lawyer, Mona Duckett, who's a highly respected and senior defense lawyer here, gets involved in the case. The appeal was based on the grounds that Helen's sentence was contrary to the public interest and brought to the administration of justice into disrepute.
