The cubicle promised a variety of advantages. It's meant to be very flexible, and it can form an impromptu conference room. The revolutionary freedom-giving cubicle came to be seen as a sort of corporate version of solitary confinement. Most offices today are still open offices. If you're looking purely at cost per square foot, having an open office is cheaper.
