The second theme in a sonata form is supposed to be in the relative major key. The fact that the second theme is not in the major key emphasizes the darkness of the character and makes it clear what brams is after. Even if you have no earthly idea of key relationships, that one heavenly g major moment still sticks out as strange. We don't really know where we are, and this is part of the reason why. And it's also why brawms was the superior composer to so many others.
