Agathocles was born kind of towards the lower rung of society, but what he lacked in money he more than made up for with ambition. He attempted not just once but twice to overthrow the Greek city state of Syracuse which is located in the southeast corner of Sicily. While he was in exile he went to the Carthaginians for help and with Carthaginian backing he actually raised a Greek army that he used to return to the city of Syracuse,. overthrew their democracy and establish himself as dictator.
