The diaphragm is in essence connected to the lungs. The average diver, when they start diving down to depth 60, 70, 80 feet, because their lungs are compressing, their diaphragM is getting sucked in. It gets stretched past the point where it's comfortable, and it triggers an urge to breathe. So that's why this idea of stretching the diaphragms is so key among competitive freedivers.
