IV Versus PO Antibiotics for UTI
If the urinalysis is clean, I would neither catheterize this baby nor give an antibiotic. If we are basing our treatment based on pyrea and we don't have a culture, what are the empiric antibiotics you are reaching for for these patients? The likelihood of this being a UTI is very, very high. So say we decide this child didn't need an IV place, won't need IV antibiotics and so we are seeing them in a clinic. It's more likely to trust people if I were in my clinic or if I're in my office because they made an appointment and came in to be seen.
