The keyboard is your friend for doing windowing things on macOS. If you ask any two Mac users, you're going to get two different answers because there are so many methods. You can have an application that is running even though it does not have a single window open. The whole close versus quit thing, close being Command W, quit being Command Q, that is something to get used to.
