The Nihilistic Mindset of the Composers of the Time
Olivier Messian's inventions galvanized this new generation of composers. He took Schoenberg's concept of total equality and then extended it to rhythms and dynamics as well. Not only were notes now placed in 12-tone rows, but their durations and their dynamics were now standardized too. This wasn't music for beauty's sake, it was music for morality's sake.
