Marshal ney personally supervised the reconstruction of the bridge, then led the charge over this rickety span. The hapsburg cavalry rode out to meet the charge and were soundly defeated. Ney now had the initiative. He pursued the retreating austrians towards the town of elkingen. As he began bringing the rest his troops across the bridge as he prepared to assault the main austrian position. Nay worried about the strong austrian right flank, so he ordered his cavalry to charge the austrian right to keep them in check. This charge succeeded beyond any one's expectations.
