Odors Are Different From Images and Sounds

The human nose contains about one thousand different types of alfactory nurons, each type able to detect a particular set of chemicals. A molecule too large to fit into one of the receptors has no odor. There is no way to interpolate between two smell molecules. This adds up to a profound difference in the underlying structure of the senses that gives rise to compelling questions about the way we think and perhaps even about the origins of language.
