There wasn't really a middle class as we know it in the north at the time. Slavery warped and ruined the southern states. There were ways to, as i said, solved the problem of chattel slavery,. But the abolitionists were not willing to authorize lincoln. And that was lost partly because people like john brown used a level of violence at a very fragile state.
