Mailchimp was trying to offer a list building tool for free, and then if you wanted to send emal you would have to pay us money. The model of offering a free, but cut down version of your service to charge user up take had been around in some form or other for decades. It was becoming hugely popular among web services around the time. Users could immediately see the benefits of the full product.

This week, we’re returning to an episode of Masters of Scale featuring Ben Chestnut, the co-founder and CEO of Mailchimp. The email marketing platform was acquired this year by Intuit in a multi-billion-dollar deal that closed this month. Hear how Chestnut used a DIY ethos to grow the company without ever raising a dollar of outside funding.
