Mailchimp was trying to offer a list building tool for free, and then if you wanted to send emal you would have to pay us money. The model of offering a free, but cut down version of your service to charge user up take had been around in some form or other for decades. It was becoming hugely popular among web services around the time. Users could immediately see the benefits of the full product.
