Convict leasing was being used across the south, but in the late 18 hundreds, it started to get a bad name. In tennessee, coal miners were tired of competing for their jobs against unpaid prisoners. So one dark night, several hundred miners walked down to the prison in stockade, and at gun point, they demanded the ward and free all the prisoners. These uprisings by free miners were violent and sometimes deadly, and they cost the state and companies a lot of money. They also soured public opinion,. helping pave the way for an end to convict leasing in tennessee. The company relied heavily on this cheap labor. But things didn't go as planned;
