The Rhetorical Strategy
If two things conflict, then one of them can't be sacred. That's the rhetorical strategy. And I think Socrates thought that those conflicts couldn't exist. Most people have a large number of things they treat as sacred, and they aren't willing to say which is the most. So this rhetorical strategy is a bit unfair, but maybe effective.
