The Utility of Feeling Like I Could Have Doed Otherwise

The self isn't executing free will, the ability to make voluntary actions is part of the self that feels like they come from within. It's a very useful thing for the brain to give this sort of phenomenal character when it executes these kinds of actions. Because it means that the organism pays attention to them and may do something different in the future. But just because it feels like I could have made coffee rather than tea doesn't mean that I actually could have done.
