Gamestop became the object of affection for people posting on read it. This provoked a response by larger instucial investors who saw the rising price and said, that's ridiculous. So now you had a pitched battle between these redit posters, retail investors who were saying, gamestop. Gamestop. And insucial investors, including people characterized as evil hedge funds, who said, this thing is overvalued. We're shorting, shorted, shorting. That pitched battle has a self kind of reinforcing loop, which is, as the stock rises, it becomes really hard to stay short. And that's clled a short squeeze.
