Is There Any Instinct to Care for Posterity or Preserve the Species?

In order to really treat the world as just a set of material propositions, you have to engage in what he calls scientism. He says it is worth inquiry whether there is any instinct to care for posterity or preserve the species. Only people educated in a particular way have ever had the idea of posterity before their ins at all. It is difficult to assign to instinct our attitude towards an object which exists only for reflective men. As we pass from mother love to rational planning for the future, we are passing away from the realm of instinct into that of choice and reflection. And instinct is the source of value.
