In the wider am tradition of moslem kingship, there is this idea that in order to be the ruler, you have to be physically whole. Blinding somebody was a keen way of then saying, no, you cannot be a ruler. You don't see s happening for the throne until sha jahan actually comes to the throne. And also, one of our big kings, even though it's mythological ritrast, he was blind. Being blind and being able to rule was a sign of wisdom, because it means you use you other sensee.
