After the Civil War it must have felt as though an entire old order had been destroyed. Here were these brave young men and women writers, artists, preachers, painters who were trying to create or figure out what the new order would be. The more I went into the feelings and moods of these people, the more I realized that they were really a kind of post-traumatic generation.
