The piece is a portrayal of Elgar's friend Richard Penrose Arnold. R.P.A. was an amateur pianist, and by the way, many of Elgar’s friends were musical amateurs. Alice Elgar said that the end of the variation reminded her of the way W.M.B. would often leave the room. The main theme is new, but it moves up and down in scales, the easiest thing to play on the piano.
