Sanderson's Hard and Soft Magic Systems
Hard and Soft is simply what percentage, how much of the magic system is explained or understood. Sanderson tends to do very hard magic systems because he very quickly lays out 70, 80, 90%. Miyazaki movies tend to go that way. Softer systems, you only see a small portion of it. Examples would be like Dresden Files, Harry Potter, lots of urban fantasy, Alien,.Lots of horror movies where you don't know the true extent of the magic of the technology.
