The Trial of Luther in Rome Before the Pope

Papal delegates were divided on the question of how luther should be tried. Should it be a secular authority, an imperial trial, or a trial in rome before the pope? If i understood his doctrine to be impious or untenable, i would not defend it. My whole purpose is to fulfil the office of a christian prince. Frederick reminds the papal delegates that luther had offered to debate publicly with any one from Rome. Or perhaps he could be tried by the emperor himself.
