When it came to questions of religion, he would just basically say, that's too serious. He made jokes about lots of things but not religious matters. Lewis Carroll was very upset when he went to see children's production of HMS Pentaphore. The idea about these what he saw is these innocent creatures making light of eternal punishment or eternal damnation really bothered him.
