Pen Station, New York, in the Nineteenth Century
The station itself was really new york's own parthenon. It came after decades of economic dominance in the gilded age. During the great depression, it would see the most foot traffic. In 19 forty five, during the war, 75 % of trips a between cities were taken by train,. But ten years later, in 19 55, 33% were by train, down from 75%. And 25 percent were taken by plane, so 25 up from three per cent. Tom this is an extremely active station during the 19 thirties and 19 forties. Although by this time it really becomes more associated with commuting than it does long distance travel.
