Brahms - The Last Violin Variation
The music has been literally shattered by the force of all that is built up. You can hear that in the obsessive repeated notes on the violins, repeating that e over and over out of breath despondent. The crowning glory of this movement comes actually in the middle section, where, finally out of energy, the music settles to one of the most profoundly sad moments in all bram's music.
