What Happened to the Church of England?
In 1534, England officially separated from Rome. By Pope, hello centuries of religious and political turmoil. Monasteries and convents were dissolved. Catholic practices, like confession and praying to the Virgin Mary, were banned. The pendulum oscillated during the reigns of Henry VIII's children - veering more Protestant under Edward VI, back to Catholic under Mary,. Then away again under Elizabeth I who couldn't endorse Catholicism because by its tenets she was Henry's illegitimate child as the product of his controversial second marriage.
