In 1877 in Sydney, Charlotte McNeely was attempting to get a divorce from her husband. In the UK, fathers who wanted to protect their daughters' inheritance had joined forces with women's right activists. Together, they were campaigning for changes in the law that would mean married women would have control over their own finances and property. Two years later, in 1884, the South Australian government followed suit and passed the Married Women's Property Act. Over the next 10 years, the other colonies in Australia passed similar bills,.
