Collette Wheelie and the Claudine Book
Collette had a brief relationship with Natalie Clifford Barney, an American writer who moved to Paris and hosted a women-only salon. Barney herself was famously openly lesbian at a time when homosexuality was heavily stigmatized. As Collette was writing the later Claudine books, she was also starting to think about leaving her husband. She published Dialogue De Bit or Creature Conversations under the name Collette Wheelie in 1904.
