CHAPTER

The Myth of the Cowboy

A cowboy is an unsavory criminal character and it was common again for many commentators to present them not just as naive like in that passage from the Wichita eagle but even as ruffians and hoodlums a danger to society. Music was very important to the cowboys it was a pastime something to do to entertain yourself and stay sane on these long journeys so calming music could help to prevent stampedes which often broke out at night. It became a standard custom to sing or play a musical instrument in order to calm the herd and also in order to signal that you were still alive and on your horse to the other horsemen.
