The Importance of Magia
The term Magia was used to describe a class of priests in the Persian Empire. It didn't necessarily have a negative connotation all the time but even that early you do have some literary references to Magi in a more pejorative sense. But it does seem to apply to itinerant, possibly freelance ritual specialists who would do any number of rituals for you whether it's divination, healing.
