Lincoln tells the stories in a way that would seem to appeal to pathos. But then what does he do? He higrevell in the guise of murder. This is a technique of lincoln's to a put questions in in the voice of other people. And they apparently are not persuaded, because they say, well, what does all this have to with the perpetuation of our political insentent?
