The Difficulty of Encryption

I've been in a situation more than once where someone has passed away unexpectedly. I am the person they phone. They say this person has died. Can you help me with their computer and their phone and everything? Now it tends to be easy because people don't really encrypt to any degree. But I also want to have a good setup that I believe in that uses things like encryption and security. Finding a balance for all of this is really difficult as if I give these passcodes to my family, they don't understand repercussions and diligence. So it creates a difficult situation which I still haven't solved.
