There is a left over puritan ethic, i think, in many americans. The puritans contributed a lot to the philosophical foundation of the united states. Get married before you have children. Stay married. Work out your problems. Be a good father or mother. If you're in school, stay in school. Get a good education. Don't buy things you can't afford. And don't go into great debt.
