The book is written from the perspective of Max, a nine-year-old Jewish boy in Poland during World War II. He describes how he and his family were forced to leave their home by German soldiers after they got a math problem wrong. "I don't know where we are going or why, but I have no choice but to go with them," says Max about being sent back to Poland.
