The Importance of Intertestamental Literature in the Creation of Israel
In Genesis Hebrews 11 the interesting part about Hebrews is that Hebrews is drawing its illustrations and examples from the ways that the Jews of that time thought. So there are things that ideas that took shape in the intertestamental period that you really can't find in the Old Testament but they're used as fodder for the author of Hebrews to draw on. In that sense we could say that at least Abraham may well have perceived that the promises he was receiving went beyond physical promises to some spiritual that is the land of the covenant which ends up being Israel.
