The biblical notion of kingship, for instance, was so stamped on Tolkien's mind and imagination that he couldn't but bear traces of it. Second, Tolkien expressed an about dislike for allegory, preferring instead what he called applicability and real history. So when identifying the Catholic elements of the Lord of the Rings, we must be careful to speak of echoes, resonances, parallels, resemblances rather than of intentional allegories or symbolism.
