How Do You Model Programming Languages?

It took us two years to really figure out how to get the modelling of the language plus the data base right. I was like, man, there's not that many people thinking about this in a principal way, and everyone is just doing it. Cross language is super messy. And then once even we did that, people are like, why would you ever do that?
