The Dystopian Future of DARPA
In 1972, the Department of Defense took over the program because there were so many defense applications for it. In 1973, the Mansfield Amendment limited DARPA to only military projects. So that's what wound up happening during the 1970s and '80s. We're not wrong to be paranoid about what DARPA is working on, for sure. But we also have to recognize that some of the technology that we are currently using came as a result of the work that this previous incarnation was doing back when they were ARPA.
