The Paradox of the Self
Plotinus says the soul is a unified locus of awareness for the entire body. He dismisses Stoic attempts to explain this via some kind of chain reaction of physical signals through the body, he writes. In his treatise that Porphy replaced at the very beginning of the Eniads, Plotinus asks who we are and tackles the question of the self more directly than any philosopher had done before.
