Jefferson inherited from his father-in-law enslaved people, inherited lands and inherited debt. Under the laws of Virginia at the time he inherited was encumbered with this legal doctrine called entailed. Jefferson wasn't in the position to sell that land to discharge the debts that he had inherited.
