The Origins of Asteroids

Asteroids are fragments of the very early planetesimals that went on to form the planets we see today. The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter is because there would have been a fifth rocky planet, if it wasn't for Jupiter's gravitational perturbations. Some of this gets cleared out with collisions with other planets, but some of it was left in relatively stable orbits.
