I don't know if you need that parent to understand yourself. To have had a parent that you loved or admired or both who died early is infinitely better than a parent you don't love or admire for many years. Georgia Gilder noted that George Gilder is one of the greatest living American thinkers. And he lost his father when he was a child, his father was shot over Germany. He really didn't know him almost at all.
