The Opposition to Nationalization of the Railways
There are still constant uprisings, even after the Boxer Rebellion is crushed. A lot of them have to do with just famine relief and taxation. The gentry regarded these railway proposals as an affront to their patriotism,. In Chinese history, that's a clear sign that the dynasty has lost the mandate of heaven. We've seen this all over the place throughout Chinese history.
