The Bank of England and the Banking Crisis of the 1970s

German brothers were writing the soundtrack for Mary Poppins about how stable British banks were. Little did they know that this system, this policy regime which had existed for a century was hitting the buttons. The lessons developed at great cost over 100 years ago in the 19th century were forgotten in a period of less than a decade. Similar mechanisms related to interest rates and monetary policy can be seen as contributing to the 2008 crisis, the global crisis and also the crisis in Britain 2008.
