Osama bin Laden had a very similar experience in the late 90s, when al-Qaeda Lieutenant Jamal al-Fadil was built out of some untold sum of money in Sudan for red mercury. The State Department responded by telling Sri Lanka not to worry about it, because red mercury isn't real.
